Background

This GlobVolcano project is part of the Data User Element (DUE) program of the European Space Agency (ESA). It is lead by Carlo Gavazzi Space (CGS) as prime contractor with NOVELTIS, Istitut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP), MDA INC. Canada, Tele-Rilevamento Europa (TRE), TerraSphere The Netherlands, Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy (BIRA-ISAB) and Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) The goal of the project is to demonstrate EO based integrated services to support the Volcanological Observatories and other mandate users in their monitoring activities. EO based information services will be related to the responsibility areas of user organizations and particular emphasis will be addressed to prevention and early warning.During the project a worldwide selection of user organization will cooperate with the project team in order to consolidate and harmonize user requirements. The project will provide the following information services:

  • Deformation mapping by SAR
  • Surface thermal anomalies
  • Volcanic gas emission (SO2)
  • Plumes and clouds characteristics (volcanic ash)

The objectives of the project are:

  • Define an EO based service for volcanic observatories based on the user requirements
  • Integrate latest EO technologies with the state of the art ground based observation
  • Demonstrate the service at various volcanic observatories and user organizations
  • Validate the service
  • Develop and maintain a GlobVolcano database
Volcanic gas emission (SO2) service is provided by a link to Support to Aviation Control Service (SACS - part of ESA GSE Promote).
